Margaret R. Tucker Margaret R. Tucker

Margaret (Maggi) R. Tucker, born 1936, is a native of South Dakota and has lived in Chicago, Minnesota, Turkey (where she and her husband taught school for five years under the auspices of the United Church of Christ), and in Texas.

Maggi is Minister of Music Emerita of First Congrega-tional Church, Houston TX, where she served as organist and director of vocal and handbell choirs for twenty years and co-edited the church's hymnal Hymns of Truth & Light, now in use in ninety congregations across the country. Prior to her tenure at First Congregational, she served as choir director and/or organist in several churches in Minnesota and Houston.

She is a composer of choral and handbell music, as well as of hymn tunes, with more than eighty compositions in print. Her handbell compositions have won area and national composition contests. She has served as conductor and/or clinician for numerous local, state, area, national and international handbell festivals and seminars. Her hymn tunes appear in publications by Hope Publishing Co. and Selah Publishing Co., in the 2005 revision of the Church of Scotland’s Church Hymnary, as well as in Hymns of Truth & Light.

Maggi holds a B.Mus. degree in organ from The American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, and masters degrees in choral conducting and cultural anthropology from the University of Houston. Her field work, in preparation for her master’s thesis in cultural anthropology was done in southern India. At the University of Houston, she studied composition with David Ashley White.

She has served on the national boards of the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers and the United Church of Christ Musicians Association. She is one of the first Commissioned Ministers of Music in the United Church of Christ.

She is fond of mystery novels and gardening, and is addicted to sudoku, crossword and crostic puzzles. Maggi is married to the Reverend Robert H. Tucker. They have three adult children and two grandsons.
